With Christmas just around the corner and presents left to buy, it is important to think of how we can cut over consumption and waste this Christmas by purchasing thoughtful and ethical gifts. The mindset of buying gifts for the sake of it needs to shift. Not only is it a waste of money but it’s likely going to end up in landfill if it is not what the recipient wants or needs. With that being said, one ethical gift is better than none, so don’t stress yourself out too much trying to find one. Christmas is a time to enjoy yourself, and if this is your first year trying to shop more ethically, we have got you sorted with some inspiration!
Independent and Ethical brands
The best place to buy ethical pieces from is independent brands. Now more than ever it is important to support local or buy from ethical brands trying to make a difference. We suggest looking at Etsy or Not on the High Street for unique gifts from independent sellers or check out this blog post for our favourite sustainable fashion brands.
Buy Second hand!
The amount of clothing you can buy from eBay, Vestiaire and Depop that is in mint condition is incredible. Not only is this one of the most sustainable ways to shop, by keeping clothing in circulation, but it will also save you a lot of money.
Practical or Experience gifts
I think with this time of year, it's easy to end up buying lots of plastic gifts as ‘stocking fillers', or just buying a gift because you have to. This is not only a waste of money but usually, the items are not used and are sat redundant or eventually end up in landfills. Practical gifts are great as they won’t be wasted and it’s just what the recipient needs and experiences will make a great memory.
- Practical gift ideas – vouchers for a haircut, vouchers for kitchen appliances, money towards an upcoming holiday,
- Experience gift ideas – tickets to the theatre or a comedy show, a spa day, indoor skydiving, wine tasting, bungee jumping.
Low waste gifting
There are great marketplaces online for low waste gifting – you can get plastic-free skincare, reusable bamboo makeup remover pads, soaps, hair gel, candles and much more. Check out The Ethical Market for some great low waste and ethical gifts and Upcircle for the most amazing plastic-free and refillable skincare.
Remember, don’t get too stressed out trying to get everything low waste – something is better than nothing. Hope you have a great Christmas!
